Balerno had its first ever switch-on of Christmas Lights in Main Street on Thursday 8th December. In perfect weather with a clearing sky and in moonlight, the lights on four trees in Market Square on Main Street burst into light after a count down led by Deal Park Primary School Head Boy and Head Girl, Robert Barks and Zoe Ward, after the school choir had entertained the crowd of well over two hundred to Carols and Christmas songs.
The crowd were also able to sample hot apple juice and hot chestnuts laid on by the Balerno Village Trust, and contribute to the Trust’s Community Consultation, in addition to being challenged by The Great Balerno Christmas Quiz (sponsored by Balerno Parish Church) - price £1 - copies of which will be available at other events over the weekend. Answers will be published on the Community Council’s website nearer to Christmas.

Light up Balerno involved installing lights on four trees in the Market Square in Main Street. The lights have been paid for following a cross community campaign initiated and co-ordinated by Balerno Community Council with a crowd funding initiative organised by the Balerno Village Trust. The Council is now considering the opportunities for extending the lights to other areas of the Main Street, and will consult residents about the options.

The switch-on marks the start of the Balerno Christmas weekend which includes:
  • The Christmas Farmers Market on Saturday
  • The Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday and Sunday and;
  • The traditional Brass Band Concert on Saturday evening with the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band

We hope to see you there!
