Balerno Christmas Fayre and Lights

Christmas Lights Switch-on - 6:45pm Thursday 7th December

Following the success of last year's fundraising and inaugural Balerno Christmas lights switch-on, the Balerno Christmas Fair will be returning for 2017. Light will be switched on at 6.45pm on Thursday 7th December by the Rehana Shanks of Dean Park Primary School, along with the school's Head Boy and Head Girl. DPPS Choir will be singing alongside One Bar Rest.

The festivities will begin at 6.00pm, followed by the lights switch-on, where there will be a warming BBQ, carol singing and lots more. Shops and businesses on Main Street will also be opening late.

Edinburgh Hogmanay Ambassador Programme

At this year’s Edinburgh New Years event there are lots of exciting volunteering opportunities available through the new Hogmanay Ambassador Programme.

This programme is designed not only to make the event unforgettable, but also to be beneficial to volunteers in return for giving up their time. Being a Hogmanay Ambassador is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

There are three amazing events and some training dates including:

Torchlight Procession - 30.12.17
Must be available for training dates 21 or 22 December and 29 December - evening sessions.

Street Party Hosts - 31.12.17
Must be available for training session 29 December - evening session.

Message from the Skies - 01.01.18 – 25.01.18
Must be available for training session 29.12.17.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay organisers want people who are proud to represent Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and through the various roles in the Ambassador Programme have something for everyone to take part. All ambassadors have to be over the age of 18 by 01.12.17.

Are you aged 65 or over? Do you want to take up a new activity?
As we get older, some of us might experience changes in our thinking or memory skills. Research has suggested that taking up a new activity, especially one we’ve never done before, might help maintain our thinking skills.

A research team at Heriot-Watt University is exploring how taking up a new activity might benefit our thinking skills and wellbeing. They are looking for people aged 65 and over in Edinburgh and the Lothians to take part.
