About Balerno

Balerno is a village about seven miles south west of Edinburgh's city centre. It is an area steeped in history, with close community ties, and was awarded Fairtrade Village status in 2013.

Often referred to as a Gateway to the Pentlands, Balerno sits at the foot of the Pentland Hills (pictured above), allowing access to Edinburgh's outdoor playground.

The village also hosts a popular Farmers Market in the Main Street every month. Pictures of the popular Apple Day held in October are below. There is also an annual Children's Gala which features the grueling six-mile Rigg Race which attracts leading athletes from all over Central Scotland and Fife. The picture below is the start of the 2025 event in which local runner, Rachel Caves, smashed the female course record, completing the course in 35min 03sec.
