Balerno has grown substantially over the years and it now has a High School plus Dean Park Primary School.

The village has a Scotmid coop supermarket and a smaller Scotmid nearby as well as a pizza restaurant and an Indian restaurant. Both do takeaway. There is also a fish and chip shop.

A chemist, nursery, dog grooming parlour, hardware shop and two hairdressers plus The Grey Horse and Balerno Inn, two popular pub/restaurants, are in the Main Street.

A well-stocked library is situated in an annex of the primary school and there is a Community Centre which has recently been given a facelift.

For those interested in sport there are tennis courts, a bowling club (the picture shows Hugh Gibson after winning the seniors title), a rugby club, which hosts Currie Chieftans who run mini-rugby, as well as fishing at Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs.

The nearest golf course is at Baberton and Harburn is not far away and a Scout group also operates in the village.

Of course, Balerno is only minutes away from paths and trails in The Pentland Hills.
