Balerno Music Festival

Balerno Music Festival Friday 3-5, October 2008
The Edinburgh International Festival better look to its laurels - Balerno is out to show Edinburgh & the Lothians what a real music festival sounds like! The Pentland Hills will be alive with the sound of music this October with a programme which caters to all musical tastes. The inaugural community run Balerno Music Festival will take place in Balerno over the weekend of Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October, 2008.

For the adults
There’s something for day and evening, young and old. It’s a first for Balerno … an unmissable fun weekend of music which the whole family can enjoy. A warm welcome is extended to those from the valley and outwith. The weekend will comprise more than 20 concerts and events. Within the festival programme for adults there is a mix of: orchestral, folk and choral concerts; a piano & song recital; a ceilidh dance; a jazz evening; folk music sessions and more. “We’ve catered for a mix of interests and tastes to give people different ways to spend their day or evening. Why not come along with friends and make a night of it?” said Richard Henderson, who chairs the Music Festival steering group.
For the kids
There are four events scheduled for the children from ages 3 to secondary school. So if you are looking for ways to entertain the kids over the weekend and/or wish them to experiment with musical instruments for the first time or improve their current musical ability, then there is something for all. Each event offers children a different musical experience from the fun, lighter side with catchy sing along sessions with audience participation and humorous sketches, to more educational workshops allowing children (junior and senior) to try out new instruments and learn from a pro.
A social ‘hub’
Five different venues in Balerno are being used to stage these events – Balerno Parish Church, Balerno Bowling Club, Balerno Parish Church New Hall, the Grey Horse Inn and the new St Joseph’s Centre. There will be a real festival atmosphere over the weekend. Throughout the weekend refreshments, light lunches and suppers will be available at the New Hall, the social ‘hub’ to the Festival, so why not get some friends together and plan a night out? During the day people can meet informally while enjoying coffee/tea and home baking. What a great way to complete your Festival experience. So in short – no matter your age or interest, there are many ways to partake in the festival!
